How to Add a Border in Photoshop Cc 2017

Let's add a few more finishing touches. On a new layer, we'll be adding a soft border around the image.

Creating a New Layer

Up until now, we have been working with layers, but we haven't created any new ones. This is easy to do from the Layers panel. On top of all our existing layers, we'll add a feathered frame to our image.

Let's make sure that the new layer we create appears on the top of all the layers.

Step 1. To activate the topmost layer, in the Layers panel,

Click the topmost layer

Now let's add a new layer in the Layers panel.

Step 2. To create a new layer, at the bottom of the Layers panel,

Click create a new layer button

A new layer appears. We will draw the feathered frame here.

Creating a Border

Now let's create a soft border around the edge of the picture. We will use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select the area and the Feathering tool to soften the border.

Using the Marquee Tool

The Rectangular Marquee tool is a selection tool that allows us to select a rectangular area.

Let's use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select an area about a 1/8 inch from the edge of our picture.

Step 1. To activate the Rectangular Marquee tool, in the Tools panel,

Click rectangular marquee tool

Step 2. To select an area around the edge of the image,

Press & Drag the area 1/8" from the top-left corner
to 1/8" from the bottom-right corner

You see a blinking selection about 1/8" from each edge of the image.

Inverting a Selection

The part of the image that is selected is inside the selection boundary. We need to select the area outside the marching ants in order to create a frame along the edge of the image.

Step 1. To invert the selection, on the Menu bar,

Click Select, Click Inverse

You see two rows of marching ants. They indicate that the edge is selected.

Feathering a Selection

To feather a selection is to soften its edges by building a transition boundary between the selection and its surrounding pixels. We will apply feathering to the edge of the selected area. We can do that by refining the edges of the selection.

Step 1. To begin refining the selection, on the Options bar at the top,

Click Select, Click Select and Mask button

In the panels on the right, you see the Refine Edge panel:

refine edge dialog box

Behind the panel is a preview of the part of the photo we have selected. As we change the values in the panel, we will be able to preview the changes in the image behind it. Let's feather the edge of our selection.

Step 2. To enter a value, in the Feather field,

Press & Drag the value, type: 7, Click ok button

You see the corners of the selection become slightly more rounded.

Filling a Selection

We have already learned how to select a color from the Swatches panel and the Color Picker. Now, let's choose a color using the Fill command for the image border.

Step 1. To begin to apply a border color, on the Menu bar,

Click Edit, Click Fill...

You see the Fill dialog box.

Step 2. To fill the border selection, in the Contents drop-down list,

Click contents drop down list, Click Foreground Color, Click ok button

Since the foreground color in the Foreground/Background section of the Tools panel is blue, the border fills with blue.

Step 3. To deselect the area, press:

Control key+D

NOTE for MacOS Users: To deselect the area, press: Command key+D.

The feathered border is filled with the chosen color:

The girl on the beach with the text and border

NOTE: If you see the girl's reflection above the border, make sure to Press & Drag the border layer to the top in the layers panel.

Step 4. To save the file, on the Menu bar,

Click File, Click Save

Saving as a TIFF

We are working in a Photoshop document, and up to this point we have maintained all the layers. Since this image is intended for print, we want to reduce its file size by merging all the layers and saving it as a TIFF.

Step 1. To begin saving as a TIFF with no layers, on the Menu bar,

Click File, Click Save As...

You see the Save As dialog box.

Let's rename the file.

Step 2. To enter a file name, in the File name field, type:

Dreaming

Step 3. To choose the TIFF file type, on the Save as type drop-down list,

Click drop down arrow, Click TIFF (*.TIF, *.TIFF)

Step 4. To merge all the layers into one,

Click the Layers checkbox

The checkmark has been removed.

Step 5. To save the file,

Click save button

You see the TIFF Options dialog box:

TIFF options dialog box

The following table explains these options:

Option Description
Image Compression Controls whether and how image will be compressed; compression makes files smaller but often slower to open and print.
Pixel Order Controls how the colors in pixels are arranged. The Per Channel option offers better compression.
Byte Order Optimizes image for PC or Mac
compatibility; in most cases, either
option works on both platforms.
Save Image Pyramid TIFFs sometimes saved at multiple
resolutions: a low-resolution version is saved for previewing in page layout programs, while a high-resolution
version is saved for actual printing.
Layer Compression Affects how Photoshop handles multiple-layered TIFFs, pros and cons of each method listed in parenthesis ().

Step 6. To accept the default TIFF options,

Click ok button

The file is saved.
